How to Design for Newsprint

Designing for newsprint poses challenges that may not exist for other types of paper, as newsprint is absorbent. A newspaper ad or segment that is only in black and white may be ignored by readers, so using even slight amounts of color will improve the odds that readers will notice your design. Since your design will be printed, you must make sure that the design is created using the CMYK color model instead of the RGB color model.

Create a tinted background for your design. To create a tint in Photoshop, pick your desired color and spread it over the white background. Select the colored layer and click on the "Layers" palette. Pick "New Adjustment Layer" and select "Photo Filter" from the list. Select the "Color" radio button and pick the color you would like to tint. Move the cursor around on the "Density" option below the "Color" button to set your tint.

Set your image to "CMYK" mode. If the image has not yet been created, you will have the option to select "CMYK" when you are picking other options for your project. If you have already created your design, go to "Image" in the toolbar, then click "Mode" and select "CMYK."

Use borders to draw attention to your design. Create a new layer and use the Paint Bucket tool in Photoshop to color the layer with your desired shade. This layer should be larger than your design's layer, and when you are finished, right click on this new layer and select "Send to Back." The edges of this layer will now appear as a border for your image.

Use images in your design. Images that depict action are often the best way to attract a reader's attention, though any design will make an impression. Use clip art, create images or ask a client for images to avoid copyright problems.
