Gather materials related to your game. Collages incorporate all sorts of mediums. From newspapers to caution tape, you decide on the textures and colors for your design. For a video game, you may think about incorporating old or unusable game disks or game controllers. For something like poker, you could use a deck of cards.
Design your collage on a poster board base and choose a background color or design. You may want to use a large photo or different colors of paper. You could use newspaper to cover the back as well. Decide on a theme related to your game. Pick out colors related to this theme and plan to find shapes with these themes and colors in mind. For example, poker involves playing cards, which have themes of kings and queens, as well as hearts and diamonds. A common color scheme might be red, black and white.
Sketch out the look of your collage around a visual focus related to your game, such as a main character or symbol. Think of how you can cut and arrange your materials to create shapes and colors. For instance, in a poker collage, you may draw the profile shape of a king and queen sitting across from one another on the board, drawing only the outlines of their faces, clothes, crowns, hair and body. Then without glue, arrange elements around these characters, filling in their robes with playing cards, using poker chips for eyes or creating hair from fake money.
Use colored materials like pictures, cards and scrapbooking paper to provide color for each section of your collage. For example, red hearts and diamonds playing cards can create the color of the king and queen's robes by gluing the cards in rows, filling in the design, and then cutting the cards to fit inside the lines of the robe.
Attach the various materials on to the poster board. For paper materials, use glue or glue sticks to fix on by pressing and holding firmly in place until stuck. You may also want to use rubber cement to attach objects to your poster board.
Add string, lace, cloth, or felt for texture. String adds a three-dimensional aspect to the collage. Felt or cloth creates a textured surface. Poker tables often always a green felt or cloth surface, so for this game's collage, you can cut and arrange the felt in between the king and queen's figures. Use string for the king and queen's hair. Add lace for the collar and trim of the robes.
Create an eye-catching focus for your collage. Draw attention to a main theme in your collage. This should be a bright or larger design piece inside of your collage. You can also add a three-dimensional object. For example, you could create a pyramid with poker chips to fix onto the collage. In groups of five, stack up the poker chips, super gluing each poker chip to the next, until you have 10 stacks. Line up four stacks so they lay down like a roll of coins, super gluing each touching edge. Next, super glue the next three stacks to the base of four, then glue the next two stacks to second row, and then super glue the last stack to the top of the pyramid.
Set your centerpiece into a spot with plenty of space to bring focus. Using the poker chip pyramid as an example, you can place the poker chip pyramid in the center of the poster board so that it lays horizontal in between the king and queen. Take a pencil and trace the edges of the pyramid so that you can see a rounded edge triangle. Cut out the triangle from the center of the poster board and push your poker chip centerpiece so it snugly fits in the triangle.
Spice up your collage with funky elements. Fish nets, caution tape, rope, keychains, buttons, or sunglasses can add a funky look to your collage depending on your theme. For example, you can break or cut the black sunglasses in half at the plastic bridge of the nose piece. Make a small incision above the the nose of your poker queen and king. Press the broken or cut plastic edge into the incision, then super glue the ear piece to the poster board.
Use glitter, sequins, or shiny paper to draw attention to make your collage stand out. Glitter could be used to fill in the crowns of the king and queen. Smear a glue stick in the design of the crown and then use a tub of glitter to carefully sprinkle onto the glue.
Cut out letters from magazine headings to add words to your collage. Use dialogue or common phrases associated with your game to create these words, then add them into the design. You could add poker phrases like "Royal Flush!" or "Hit Me!" that relate to the game.
