Michigan Art Shows

Each year, hundreds of towns and cities across Michigan hold fairs and festivals. Art fairs allow visitors to buy art within any budget, talk with artists, discover up-and-coming musicians and sample food from local restaurants. Below are a few highlights of the Michigan art fair season. Each art fair offers something unique, from four-fairs-in-one to performances by popular musicians to a marina location to Victorian-garbed volunteers to a children's parade.
  1. The Ann Arbor Art Fairs

    • Artists exhibiting in the Ann Arbor Art Fairs employ a variety of media, from glass to clay and photography to pastels.

Every July in southeast Michigan, the Ann Arbor Art Fairs take over the streets around the University of Michigan Diag. Four art fairs, each independently organized, make up these events, yet they are held on the same dates to allow visitors to experience a large range of art, music and performances within a few city blocks. The original Ann Arbor Art Fair has garnered many accolades, and as of 2010, it was named the Number One Art Fair in the U.S. by "American Style" magazine for seven years straight.

    • Although an usual location for an art festival, the Suttons Bay Marina Park offers the art festival a lakeside location.

The Suttons Bay Art Festival in northeast Michigan draws artists from across the state as well as the U.S. This art festival, held annually at a marina in early August, features a lakeside view.

The Victorian Art Fair in northern Michigan, generally held mid-August, offers a juried art fair with a Victorian spin. The fair features kid-friendly events such as the 2010 lineup that includes a frog racing contest, cherry-seed-spitting contest, wooden sailboat race in the nearby creek and ice-cream-licking contest.

Art on the Lake in Curtis

    • In past years, Art on the Lake offered an art tent and parade for children.

The "lake" in this art fair's title refers not to one of the Great Lakes, but to the much smaller South Manistique Lake in the Upper Peninsula. Every year, Art on the Lake is held in the Erickson Center Park along the lake—generally on the Saturday of Labor Day weekend. In addition to dozens of artists and crafters, the Art on the Lake fair typically offers music, activities for children and a silent auction.
