Find the image you wish to re-create. Using Google image search, type in the name of the band and search for the band's logo. Save the image you like and print it out. If you wish to create an image from your imagination, then draw it out on a piece of 8 1/5-by-11-inch paper.
Place the hard clear plastic over the image. You can buy hard acetate in any art store or use any clear plastic sheet that is strong enough to manipulate when you begin cutting. Tape the image to the acetate. You should be able to see the image through the acetate as though you were looking through a picture frame.
Trace the image on the acetate. Use a fine point black pen to trace the outline of the image. Separate different elements of the image to give your stencil greater definition. For example, if your image has lots of shades, you need to trace the entire area. If you want to make the shades different colors on the stencil print, you have the option of creating bridges. Bridges are where you trace breaks into the acetate that may not appear in the image.
Cut the acetate with an X-acto knife. Go back over the lines you marked with your pen, but this time using a knife. You are carving out pieces of acetate that can be discarded. Preserve the larger outline and throw away the smaller cutout pieces.
Hold the stencil up to the surface and spray paint. The paint will go through the areas you carved out and leave a new image on the surface. You can use spray paint or a brush to do this. When you pull the stencil away, it will have left the band's logo or image. You can re-use the stencil you created.
