How to Make a Picture Font

In computing, fonts are a library of vector data that tells the computer how to generate the right shape or pattern to display words in the correct shape. Because there are several alphabets in use around the world, the shape of your fonts is not limited to simple Roman script and can actually hold any image you desire. Therefore, making a picture font is as simple as making any other font.

Open your font creation software, such as Scanahand or Font Creator, or visit a font creation website. Save a copy of the font design grid to your hard drive. This will either be a graph you can print or save from the software, or a file you can download from the website.

Open the grid you downloaded in your favorite image editing software, such as Paint, Paint Shop Pro or Photoshop. Open the first of the images to be used in your font. Click "Edit" and choose the "select all" function. Click "Edit" and select "Copy," or press Ctrl-C to copy the image to the clipboard. Close the image.

Click "Edit" and select "Paste" or press "Ctrl-V" to add the image to your font grid. Adjust the size and position of the image so it fits within one of the boxes on the grid. Open the next image and repeat the cut-and-paste process. Do the same with all the other images until the grid is full. Save the grid as a new file.

    • 4

Close your image editing software. Return to the font creation software or website, and load your completed grid. Click the "Scan" or "create font" button. The software will analyze the images in your grid and make a picture font for you. Save this font file to your hard drive. To install the font, copy it to your "Fonts" folder inside the "Windows" folder.
