How to Transfer Art from Inkjet to Fabric

You have created a stunning image using paint, photography, pencils or pastels and scanned it into your computer, but what you really want to do is transfer your art onto fabric. This procedure is possible using the right equipment and materials. Regardless of the type of fabric your art should transfer without any issues. You can use images placed on fabric as cushion covers, chair covers, tablecloths or part of a clothing design. Creativity with image transfers is fairly easy, not too time consuming and you end up with a satisfying result.

Instructions

  1. Printing the Transfer

    • 1
Printing your image onto transfer paper is a simple procedure.

Place your transfer paper into the printer according to the manufacturer's instructions.

    • 2

Check that your image has a resolution of at least 200 dots per inch (dpi) to ensure good print quality.

    • 3

Flip your image because you need it to appear backward. After you iron it onto the fabric it will appear as originally intended. Flip your image in programs such as Publisher or Photoshop. You may also be able to flip the image via "page set-up" or "properties" settings in your printer software.

    • 4

Print your art onto the transfer paper. Wait until the ink is fully dry before handling.

    Transferring to Fabric

    • 5
Iron your image onto the fabric without the steam setting.

Lay your fabric on the ironing board. Make sure you smooth out any wrinkles or creases. Put iron on highest setting. Turn off steam.

    • 6

Cut out your image. Leave a 1/2 inch margin around the edges.

    • 7

Carefully peel off any backing. Place the image on your fabric.

    • 8

Place a pillowcase or hand towel over the transfer and apply consistent circular pressure over the image. Apply heat for 90 seconds to two minutes.

    • 9

Peel off the paper while it is still warm. Start in a corner and use firm, steady pressure to remove the paper. Allow the fabric to cool down completely, at which point your artwork should be successfully adhered to the fabric. Spray the entire piece of fabric with a matte finishing spray if you wish. This will help your image last longer and should mask the cut out line edges.
