Art Project on a Paper Bumblebee

Make paper bumblebees to enhance a science unit on bees or flowers. Whether a child is scared of bees, or fascinated by the little insects, you can use the time spent building a paper bumblebee to discuss what she has learned. Take advantage of storybooks featuring bees or online images to give kids an up-close look at how a bee is designed before working on an art project. Bees are not something children can get close to in real life, so this can be a helpful step.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay a sheet of yellow or orange construction paper on the table. Set a toilet paper tube on top and measure the length of the tube from end to end. Cut the paper to fit around the tube.

    • 2

Prepare all the bumblebee parts. Trace the open end of the toilet paper tube on a sheet of construction paper. Cut out the circle. Cut a heart shape out of colored construction paper or white computer paper. Cut a long triangle shape from a piece of black construction paper. Set all these aside.

    • 3

Cover a toilet paper tube with glue from a glue stick. Be sure the glue goes all the way to each end of the tube. Roll the tube on the sheet of construction paper. Use more glue to press down the seam. Trim if necessary.

    • 4

Tear strips of brown or black construction paper. These will be the bumblebees stripes. Glue four to five strips around the bee.

    • 5

Draw a face on the circular piece of construction paper. Tape on the front of the toilet paper tube to cover the opening. A piece of tape on either side of the circle will hold it in place.

    • 6

Glue the heart shaped piece of construction paper to the top of the bumblebee for wings. You can embellish the wings with a white or silver crayon before attaching. The pointed part of the heart should be pointing toward the face of the bumblebee.

    • 7

Stick a piece of tape on the wide end of the black triangle piece of construction paper. Attach this stinger to the back of the bee, placing the sticky side of the tape on the inside top of the toilet paper tube.
