Fresco Art Project

A fresco art project is a mural painting that is created on plaster. The fresco can be placed directly onto a plaster-encased wall, but a smaller-scale fresco art project can be made on a separate piece and hung as a wall hanging. Sometimes frescoes are a combination of wall murals or hangings, so it is important to make the fresco art project with a common theme or narrative that runs between all the fresco pieces.
  1. Supplies

    • You can create a fresco art project with the appropriate supplies. You will need to purchase a Plaster of Paris mix to use as the fresco base. You will also need to get clay, thin cardboard and watercolor paints with a paintbrush. These materials will allow you to create a fresco that you can make into a wall hanging.

    Process

    • You will use a thin sheet of clay as a foundation for a mold that you will make for your fresco. On the thin sheet of clay, use thin cardboard strips to create walls in the shape you desire for your fresco mold. You will then use this frame as a mold into which you'll pour the Plaster of Paris. Follow the plaster directions to give it ample amount of time to set, and then use the surface of the set plaster as your canvas for your fresco art project.

    Themes

    • Frescoes are often in separate pieces that come together with a common theme. Make the fresco art project represent a theme, such as family, religion or holidays, for example, especially if you are making a set of separate frescoes.

    Narrative

    • One of the most famous frescoes is in the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican in Rome, Italy, and it is a painted depiction of the Bible, by the famous artist Michelangelo. This is an example of how you can use a narrative to tie together paintings that make up your fresco art project. You can make the frescoes a representation of a children's story, for example, or even a family history.
