Art Concentration Projects

Art concentration projects are a grouping of art pieces that share a similar theme. A grouping of work may involve any type of art: sculpture, photography, painting, etc. Or a combination of art, to open up the minds and hearts of an audience to a particular idea. Art concentration projects are common in art schools, university art departments and galleries. Professional artists, in particular, often explore and present artwork as concentration projects when displaying new work at a gallery opening.
  1. Stay Coherent

    • Art concentration projects demand coherence and continuity in their display. A muddled grouping of work can devalue the overall intention of the project. Keeping a project’s intention clear and understandable can help an audience engage the work on a creative as well as an intellectual or emotional level. If you are establishing a concentration project around the theme of poverty, for example, ensure all of the pieces touch upon this subject in an apparent and palpable way.

    Be Bold

    • Approach your project with a sense of command and vigor. Pieces do not have to be overstated or melodramatic, but they should identify with the intensity of the subject. A project concerning wild animals, for example, may include a group of paintings or sculptures with animals in different poses, habitats or surroundings. Examining the eyes or the body posture or the ferocity of animals, as a theme, should include art work that displays these elements with vivid clarity.

    Combine Media

    • Use a variety of different media to express your artistic message. A project on the pressures in politics, for example, may include paintings of Presidents in times of great peril or debate; photographs of citizens in long voting lines at the polls; or a collage of campaign literature from all of the candidates involved in primary and general election races. Combine your media to enhance your theme and artistic voice.

    A Different Angle

    • Make your art concentration project an evening of performances. Projects do not have to be static objects on display in a gallery. Use one evening of music or a weekend of dramatic arts performances, for example, to examine themes of love, rage or family. Involve various musical instruments and scores and/or present short or original short or full-length plays. Videotape them for posterity and combine both music and drama within the same project.
