How to Create an Animated Cheer Uniform

Make a cheer uniform that moves all by itself using computer programs like Photoshop, Flash or traditional hand-drawn animation. You can animate a series of images with any of these methods by making subtle changes to the uniform in the separate frames. Whether you're interested in cheering itself, fashion, or various types of animation, this exercise will prove to be a useful learning experience.

Instructions

  1. Traditional Animation

    • 1

Draw multiple images of your cheerleader uniform on paper. Alter movement, color, size, or other attributes slightly.

    • 2

Use a lightbox to alter each image, so you can see the image prior to the one you're working on. Lay the previous image on the lightbox first, then add a new blank page on top. Draw the previous image on the blank page, adding slight alterations.

    • 3

Bind the series of images together with staples or glue on one side to create a flip book. Flip the book to animate the cheerleader uniform.

    Photoshop Animation

    • 4

Click "Window" from the menu bar at the top of the Photoshop window. Select "Animate" from the drop-down menu. A dialog box with animation layers should appear. Select "File" and then "New" from the drop-down menu to create a new file. Draw your cheer image in this area, or import a pre-existing image.

    • 5

Duplicate the layer by left-clicking it in the "Layer" box to the right of the screen and selecting "Duplicate" from the drop-down menu. This creates a second layer of the cheerleader uniform image in which you can alter its placement, color, size, and other attributes. Use the selection tool to do this. Use the lasso tool to select parts of the image for color. Color the parts with the paint bucket tool.

    • 6

Continue making subsequent duplicate layers, altering each new layer. Select the "Seconds" button at the bottom of the animation box to choose how quickly the images change. Click the arrow button across from the "Seconds" button to play the animation.

    Flash Animation

    • 7

Click on "Adobe Action Script" from the "Create New" list in Flash to open a new document for animation. Select the "Pencil" tool to draw the uniform. You can also use the "Pen" tool to create more accurate curves for the outfit if needed.

    • 8

Convert the image to a symbol. Click the first frame in the animation box at the bottom of the screen to highlight the drawing. Hit "F8" on the keyboard to open the "Convert to Symbol" dialog box. Name the symbol, and save as a movie clip or graphic.

    • 9

Click a frame in the animation box that is three frames from the first. Use the selection tool to place your uniform at another point on the screen. Insert a "tween" by right-clicking on frame one, and then selecting "create classic tween" from the drop-down menu. This creates a center point between the two locations that the cheerleader uniform will pass through and determines its path when animated. Select the first frame again, and click "Enter" to watch the cheerleader uniform as it moves along this path.
