Bumble Bee Art Projects

Bumble bees remind many people of spring and bright, sunny days. With their simple insect body, they offer everyone from kids to adults an easy subject for a successful project. You can choose to make your bumble bee art whimsical and creative or scientifically detailed enough to include its compound eyes and three-part body. The projects are suitable for a child, but sophisticated enough for adults to create and use as decor pieces.
  1. Felt Collage

    • Create a felt bumble bee collage using a background of adhesive felt attached to foam board. Cut flowers, leaves and stems from adhesive felt and attach to the background. Use yellow adhesive felt to cut out the bumble bee body parts. Add stripes and other body details with a black permanent marker. Place the bees on the flowers or in the area above the flowers. Use white fabric paint to add wing outlines to the bumble bees. Frame the finished collage.

    Papier Mâché

    • Create a large, hanging bumble bee from papier mâché. Blow up three small balloons to create the bee body. Make one balloon smaller to use as the bee's head. Cover the balloons in four layers of liquid-starch-soaked newspaper strips. Allow each layer to dry completely before adding the next. Paint the body with yellow and black acrylic paint, and then spray it with paint sealer. Add antenna and wing shapes made from chenille stems attached with hot glue. Add a hanger to the bee by using a large needle threaded with monofilament that you push gently through the bumble bee body then tie off in a knot.

    3-D Bumble Bee

    • Make a three-dimensional bumble bee sculpture out of tissue paper and pom-poms. Use fan-folded tissue paper and chenille stems to create large flowers. After fan-folding layers of colored tissue paper, wrap a chenille stem around the folded paper and twist to secure. Unfold and fluff out the paper to create the flowers. Use three small yellow pom-poms glued together to create several bumble bee bodies. Add details to the bees with black fabric paint. Attach the bumble bees to the flowers using hot glue.

    Scientific Pen and Ink

    • Study scientific artwork from nature such as that created by Audubon or DaVinci. Consider adding text in calligraphy lettering to note the scientific names of or notes about the bumble bees and flowers in the way that DaVinci sometimes did. After practicing sketches of bumble bees and flowers, use waterproof art ink to create detailed drawings of the bees and flowers. After the drawing dries, use thinned watercolor paint to paint a light wash of color over the bumble bee and flower drawings. Allow to dry and then frame the watercolor art.
