Commissioned Art Projects

Artists often create artwork and sell it to a gallery. Selling artwork and working off commissioned art, however, are two different ways to make money. When you work off commission, you provide art to a client; the art may include pottery, portraits and photography for an individual. When working off commission, provide samples of your work and provide your clients with their vision of art, not your own vision of art.
  1. Pottery

    • Pottery art projects may be sought by individuals who want custom pottery sets for their home or office. Pottery ideas for commission include dinner cups, plates, vases and urns. The client determines the color, style and patterns to include on the pottery. Make the client aware of your fee and costs for materials, including paint, clay and labor. The project should include a deadline for when the pottery will be done.

    Portrait

    • Portrait projects provide a classical look to a painting, offering a picture of a client or of a client and his family. Provide sample portraits for your client to see, including the different painting styles and types of portraits you have created--family portraits, self-portraits and landscape portraits. Arrangements should include the time frame for the portrait, the pose, paint type and the cost of the project.

    Sculpture

    • Sculpting may include self-sculptures and sculpting a client's favorite animal, car, house or loved one. When doing a sculpting project, gather as much information as possible on the object or person who is the subject. Taking photographs from different angles of the subject also helps, and then you may inform your client of the best pose or angle for the sculpture. Arrangements should include sculpture size, estimated time of completion, fee and the type of clay you will use.

    Photography

    • Photography projects may include photographs of people, images of moral wrong doing, photos of technology or photos used to send a message. Determine the type of photography style the client wants--landscape, sports, wildlife, black-and-white and/or photojournalism. The client also may want certain types of photo techniques, such as blurred images, speed shots or high-resolution images.
