New Year's Art Projects

New Year's Eve is when we get new calendars to mark, new goals to strive for and a chance at another great year. Start your new year off with a burst of creativity by doing an art project to celebrate new beginnings.
  1. Resolution Magnets

    • Making New Year's resolutions is common practice, but keeping them can be difficult. Taking the time to make a magnet that states your resolution, along with some words of encouragement or a nice drawing of the desired result, can help you stay on track to fulfilling your New Year's resolution. Simply draw, paint, or collage your resolution on to a piece of card stock or construction paper and stick a magnet strip on the back to complete this New Year's art project.

    New Year's Banner

    • Preparing the house for a New Year's party can be a daunting task. You need the right food, the right plates, the right seating to watch the ball drop on television and the right decorations. Making a New Year's banner out of string, brightly colored construction paper, glitter and a wide assortment of colored markers or pencils can help set the right mood for your New Year's party. Consider coming up with a clever rhyme or phrase for your banner, or just go with the standard "Happy new year!"

    Sparkling New Year's Ball

    • Watching the ball drop in Times Square is a New Year's tradition. If you are fortunate enough to be in Manhattan when the ball drops, you are in for an exciting night. Those of us who are at home for the celebration can watch on the television or, if you are feeling creative, you can make your own New Year's ball. Glue multicolored sequins to a foam ball, as large as you like, and push a string into it with a needle to make a New Year's ball that you can lower from a picture hanger in the ceiling at midnight. Count down out loud for added fun.

    Time Capsule

    • Making a time capsule is a creative way to celebrate the past while you move into the future on New Year's Eve. Paint a colorful and creative motif on the exterior of a clean, empty coffee can, then fill the can with remnants of the past year. You can include letters of promotion, college acceptance letters, a postcard from a friend or any other significant (and small) thing you want to save as a memory. Open the can on the following New Year's Eve to relive old memories and store new ones.
