How to Make a Storyboard

Since its development as a tool for mapping out animation sequences, many different visual media have come to use the storyboard technique. If used incorrectly, however, a storyboard becomes just one more extraneous bunch of information. A storyboard essentially depicts a series of still images referring to a sequence of images, movement or ideas. Whether used to plan a book or graphic novel, or a sequence from a film or animation, all storyboards share the same basic structure.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut drawing paper into cards of uniform size. Four-by-six-inch cards function well for smaller storyboards. Choose the size that best suits your work area and the project.

    • 2

Draw each image from your sequence on the pieces of paper. Work in light sketches with little detail. Composition and movement are more important than detail.

    • 3

Draw movement within a card as an arrow or series of arrows indicating where objects or people will move in the shot.

    • 4

Assemble the cards on a cork board from left to right, top to bottom.

    • 5

Secure the cards using push pins.

    • 6

Add or remove cards or draw on the cards as you develop the sequence.
