How to Draw Someone's Head in the Sand

Using sand as a drawing medium can be difficult; the degree of detail that can be drawn is diminished. The exact details of the face are made more challenging to capture in sand. Still, there are some excellent "sand artists" who are capable of producing very detailed sand drawings. To produce detailed sand art, a large surface of undisturbed flat sand, a calm day, and lots of time and patience are needed.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a location. The location for the drawing should be well lit and free from wind. Select a location that won't be disturbed by other people.

    • 2

Mark out a canvas on the sand. A canvas of 2 by 3 feet should be sufficient and allow the artist to work closely on the portrait.

    • 3

Even out the sand by using a flat plank or board. Run the edge of the board along the surface of the sand until it becomes flat and smooth.

    • 4

Select sticks or poles of varying thicknesses. The thickness of the stick should be similar to the thickness of a painter's brush. Finer detailed work will require a thinner stick, while large lines require a thicker stick.

    • 5

Lightly dust the canvas with water from a spray bottle. This will make the sand slightly sticky and easier to carve fine detail into.

    • 6

Study the person who's face will be drawn in the sand and examine him carefully. Look for the defining characteristics. Eyebrows, lips, eyes, nose, chin, cheek bones, ears, hair and shape of head should all be noted.

    • 7

Draw the head in the sand. First draw the outline of the head with a larger stick, then use smaller sticks to carve out the finer details. Use the hands and fingers for unique patterns such as wavy hair. Erase mistakes by using the short end of the wood plank.
