Uses for Permanent Markers

Permanent markers can be a dangerous writing tool when paired with little hands. However, permanent markers are also handy, particularly when used to fix blemishes on items around the home. Use permanent markers to display your creativity on clothes and household objects, or while studying for your next important school exam.
  1. Repairs

    • Sold in an array of colors, such as black and lime green, permanent markers make it easy to cover up scratched surfaces on picture frames and shoes. However, permanent markers may not be work well with items that are exposed to the outdoor elements, since permanent ink may fade when exposed to the sun for long periods. Color scratched surfaces with large or fine-tip permanent markers, and leave to air dry for ten minutes before touching. Retouch scratch surfaces from time to time, if the permanent marker begins to fade.

    Decorating Use

    • Permanent markers work well as a painting tool, due to the spongy felt tip and permanent ink inside the marker's barrel. Draw intricate designs on surfaces, such as leather, canvas or solid plastic using a fine-tip permanent black marker. After creating the design or drawing, color in portions of the design with large or medium-felt tip permanent markers. Strips of masking or painter's tape may also be used on items such as lampshades or wood shelving to isolate areas that will not be colored in with permanent marker.

    Shirt Printing Use

    • Marking clothes with permanent marker can cause anyone to become upset, unless the markings are done on purpose. Decorate blank t-shirts with your own creative image using colorful permanent marker. Draw the designs on the blank t-shirt with a black fabric pencil first. Then trace over the image on the shirt with permanent markers. A homemade light box can also be made using a glass-top table, lamp and Plexiglas, to trace images onto shirts with the permanent markers.

    Writing Use

    • Permanent markers are a useful writing tool. However, the use of permanent markers goes far beyond writing. Underline important passages and make notes in a book with light and bright colored permanent markers, such as yellow, bright blue or lavender. Create posters for school functions or yard sales using dark or bold colored permanent markers to capture the eye of passersby. Use different colored permanent markers to create flash cards to help you remember facts.
