How to Make a Threadless Template

Threadless is a company that prints original artwork on T-shirts, canvases and other items. The majority of their designs are produced by freelance artists who submit their artwork online. Once a design is submitted, the community rates it, and if the rating is high enough, it might get printed. At the time of publication, artists who get printed receive $2,000, a gift certificate for Threadless and $500 each time the design is reprinted. To submit a design, you provide an image of your work on a T-shirt. Threadless provides a collection of templates that feature photos of models wearing blank T-shirts and illustrations of blank T-shirts, but you can also make your own.

Instructions

  1. Create a Photo Template

    • 1

Find or create a backdrop that complements the color of the T-shirt you are photographing.

    • 2

Ask for a friend's permission to use his image on the Threadless website. Ask your friend to model in front of the backdrop wearing a blank crew-neck T-shirt.

    • 3

Take a photo of your friend with your digital camera. The front of the T-shirt should be clear, unobstructed and the main focus of the shot.

    • 4

Take a photo of the back of the T-shirt if your design goes on the back of the T-shirt.

    • 5

Edit the photo using photo-editing software, if necessary, to crop it, balance lighting and add design elements to the background.

Create a Template Using an Illustration

    • 6

Launch your graphic design software. Create a document that measures at least 640 pixels by 800 pixels.

    • 7

Draw the shape of a T-shirt using a thin black outline or an outline that is slightly darker than the T-shirt's main color. If you are having trouble drawing the shape, trace around an image of a T-shirt.

    • 8

Fill the T-shirt with a color that complements your artwork.

    • 9

Duplicate the image and raise the T-shirt's collar if your design is also going on the back of the T-shirt.
