How to Make a Symbol Pop Out on Paper

Usually, when you are depicting a symbol, it's because that symbol has important meaning and you want to emphasize it. Instead of just drawing it flatly on a piece of paper, make it stand out to your audience to give it more power. You can do this in a number of ways, including using tabs to make it pop out in pop-up book style, using color and gradient to create an illusion of it popping out, or using another substance such as cork to make the symbol pop out on paper.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

  1. Pop-Up Book

    • 1

Trace the shape of the symbol on a separate sheet of paper than the background paper.

    • 2

Draw two tabs coming out of the symbol, one from the left side and one from the right.

    • 3

Fold each tab halfway down its length. The end of it should be folded up and in toward the center of the symbol.

    • 4

Fold each tab where it meets the symbol, this time underneath the symbol.

    • 5

Fold the symbol in half, left to right, so the blank sides meet.

    • 6

      Loosen all the folds.

    • 7

Tape the outer half of each tab to the background paper so the symbol pops out of the paper.

    Contrast

    • 8

Draw an outline of the symbol on a piece of paper.

    • 9

Darken or color in the background behind the symbol, leaving the symbol white. You can do this with a pen, marker, crayon or even collage the background in with a darker shade of paper.

    • 10

Fill in any details on the symbol.

    Cork Backing

    • 11

Cut discs from an old cork with an artist's precision razor.

    • 12

Trim the discs down with the razor. Piece these together in the shape of the symbol.

    • 13

Cut out a piece of paper in the shape of the symbol and glue it to the raised cork surface. You can make the symbol stick out as far as much as the thickness of the cork discs.
