How to Make a Little Cardboard Mailbox Out of a Shoe Box

A shoe box mailbox is a common Valentine's Day project that young pupils put together each year to receive and collect valentine cards from classmates. But this easy-to do project isn't limited to February -- boxes can be made to collect notes, cards, money or audience questions during a lecture. Because a lot of flexibility and creativity can go into making the box, it could serve as a good tool for multiple occasions.

Instructions

    • 1

Take the cover off a shoe box. Using a knife or scissors, cut a hole in the cover large enough for papers, cards or envelopes to pass through. If other objects will be dropped into the mailbox, adjust the size of the hole accordingly.

    • 2

Gather tissue paper or gift wrap paper. This will be wrapped around the box and the cover for decoration. Pick a side of the box to begin this procedure. Place the paper against the portion of the box and stretch it across the bottom and back up the other side of the box. Cut and glue the paper to the box. Repeat this procedure so all sides of the box are covered.

    • 3

Wrap the cover in the wrapping or tissue paper as well. The hole that was made will be covered during the process. When the wrapping is finished and has been taped down to the cover, use the knife or scissors to cut through the wrapping. Tape down additional paper that may stand out after doing this.

Decorate the box using stickers, markers and glitter. Additionally, add small objects to the outside of the box. You can use a strong glue such as rubber cement to hold the objects securely in place.
