Make art right after meditating or in the midst of it. Meditation can put you into a spiritual and creative state of mind, leaving you focused, calm and ready to express yourself. Many spiritual traditions, from Judaism to Buddhism and beyond, incorporate regular meditation into their rituals. However, you don't have to adopt one of these religions to practice meditation. Just sit down comfortably, focus on your breathing and try to keep from getting stuck on one train of thought. To ensure that your meditative state lasts long enough for you to make some art, keep your supplies nearby and set them up ahead of time.
Allow spirit to flow though you by making spontaneous art. Don't plan ahead; just start painting, playing music or writing whatever comes to your mind first. If you practice this over and over, you will find yourself improving. Your creativity can be quickly beckoned more easily after making spontaneous art a few times. You also may be surprised by how available your unconscious mind is during spontaneous creating. Like Freud's free association, your thoughts and spiritual philosophies will bubble to the surface. Even doodling works. You may even feel like your art is coming from somewhere outside of yourself.
Working with a group on an art project can be a bonding experience, but if it's with a group that has spiritual leanings, it can be spiritual as well. You can build off one another's input into the project to get even more creative and to spark ideas for expressing your spirituality. Group art can be anything from a mural to a sculpture to a photo scavenger hunt.
Music is so often a source of spiritual and creative inspiration. Many visual artists love to make art while listening to music. It can help you focus or even bring about a trace-like state, better for receiving messages or for accessing your creative center. Religious rock songs can remind you of the power and love the universal force. Pagan chanting can put you in touch with the spirits of nature. Complicated electronica can keep everyday thoughts of work from butting in while you work on expressing yourself through art.
