Creative Things to Put on a Shirt

Revive a boring and bland t-shirt by adding creative designs, illustrations or clever wording. Use your artistic skill to create an original t-shirt that will have your friends talking. You can use visual art, words or abstract design to create a t-shirt that you will love to wear.
  1. Stenciled Art

    • Create your own unique t-shirt design that can be easily applied to multiple shirts. Make a simple stencil that features an abstract or artistic design. The stencil can be as big or small as you would like: a large design can be placed in the center of the shirt to attract the viewer's eye, while a small design can be repeated across the shirt's front, back and sleeves. Artists can use spray paint, glitter paint, fabric pens or puffy paint to color the stencil onto the t-shirt.

    Word Art

    • Create t-shirt art by using words in unusual ways. If you're not gifted with visual arts, you can generate poetry, slogans and even puns to put on the shirt. Once you've created the word art to put on the t-shirt you can decide how to express your verbal art on the t-shirt. Use letter patches, puffy paint, printer transfer paper or stencils to creatively write your artistic words onto the t-shirt. Arrange the letters creatively in different sizes and colors or on different planes.

    Painted Art

    • Because canvas paintings never leave the wall, many artists wish there was a more public way to display their work to others. Create a painted work of art that you can wear around and show off to your friends. Create a unique design displaying subjects such as your favorite painting, animal or even monster. Paint your design on the t-shirt with either acrylic paint or fabric paint. This colorful, creative way to decorate a t-shirt can allow artists to wear their skill rather than hide it.

    Three-Dimensional Art

    • Create a t-shirt that uses different shapes, colors and textures to make a creative and unique three-dimensional work of art. Arrange different craft materials such as pom poms, glitter and plastic jewels on the t-shirt to create a pattern you like. Then use fabric glue to adhere the materials to the shirt. If this idea sounds too extreme for your taste, use creatively cut, colored and patterned patches of fabric to cover the front and back of the t-shirt for a more subdued--but just as creative-- alternative.
