How to Frame Encaustic Art

Encaustic art is a specialized art form that uses a wax coating over the surface of the art. This wax is part of the art and encapsulates the entire art form. Framing the art will protect it from dust and other damage. There's no problem with framing the art, except that it's necessary to ensure that the wax doesn't come in contact with the glass of the frame, which will cause the art to look distorted. The art should also be kept well away from direct sunlight to prevent the wax from melting, which will ruin the art at worst, and stick to the frame at best.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width and height of the encaustic art paper or board. Purchase a frame that's at least two inches larger than the paper on all sides.

    • 2

Cut a piece of photo mat board to the same measurements as the inside of the frame.

    • 3

Place the encaustic art piece onto the center of the photo mat board. Draw the outline of the art piece onto the board. Make a second mat board piece to the same dimensions if the mat isn't thicker than the encaustic art.

    • 4

Cut out the inside of the board or boards with a utility knife.

    • 5

Place the mat board on a flat surface. Place the encaustic art inside the hole in the center of the board. Tape the art to the back of the boards so that the art can't fall to the front of the frame.

    • 6

Place the mat board and art piece inside the frame. Make sure that the wax doesn't touch the glass of the frame.

    • 7

Hang the art in an area well away from direct sunlight, as the sun will damage the art and wax finish.
