How to Mount & Frame Fine Art and Photography

As an artist, no matter what medium you work in, you want to be able to display your works beautifully and professionally. Environmental factors such as heat and humidity can damage and even destroy prints over time if they are not framed correctly. Mounting and framing your fine art and photography properly will preserve the artwork you have created so you can proudly share it for years to come.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure your fine artwork or photograph using a straight-edged ruler.

    • 2

Choose the color of mat board you want to mount your art or photo on. You can choose a color that complements the tones and shades of your work or a neutral shade like beige, white or black. If your art or photo is a standard size, such as 5x7 or 8x10, you can purchase a pre-cut mat that will fit the standard size; if the art is not a standard size, you can cut the mat board to size to fit the piece.

    • 3

Lay your mat upside down on your workspace. Center your artwork or photograph on the mat and secure it to the mat using acid-free tape; the chemicals in ordinary tape can discolor your work. Tape down only the edges of your piece to the mat.

    • 4

Take your piece of art board and measure it against your mat. If it is the same size, you will not need to cut it to size. If the art board is larger than the mat, use a craft knife to cut it to the exact size of the mat.

    • 5

Spray the art board with the adhesive spray and place it on the back of the mat board. Place a heavy object, such as a large book, on top of the two boards and let it rest there for two to three hours so the art board is securely adhered to the mat board.

    • 6

Put your matted artwork or photo into a frame. If your piece is a standard size, you can purchase a frame that complements your work. You can also have a custom frame built for your work. If your work is loose when you place it in the frame, use a piece of cardboard cut to the same size as your mat and art board to help your piece fit securely and snugly in the frame.

Place the backing on the frame and secure it in place. Add any hanging materials to the frame, such as hooks, and mount the frame on your wall.
