How to Make a Press Mold

Press molds are used to make designs from clay. Press molds are simple to make, but require some skill if the clay needs to be fired in a kiln. For simple craft projects, some types of clay are self-hardening, while others need baking. The molds themselves can be any rigid form, made of plastic, plaster or even glass. Press molds are most commonly used for making tiles and low reliefs, although they are usable for many other clay sculpting activities.

Instructions

    • 1

Ensure all areas of the mold are clean and free of lint or residue.

    • 2

Start with the deepest cavity of the mold. Use your fingers to push clay into all cavities and crevices.

    • 3

Allow to dry until you see the clay begin to pull away from the edges of the mold. This time will vary greatly, depending on the type of clay used.

    • 4

Turn the mold over carefully, and place it clay side down on a solid surface. Lift the mold off the clay.

    • 5

Allow to harden for 24 to 48 hours. Follow the directions on the clay packaging for kiln temperature or other necessary finishing procedures.
