Art Shows in Matlacha in Southwest Florida

Matlacha is a small town on Pine Island, off the western coast of central Florida north of Tampa. Dubbed Florida's Creative Coast, the greater Pine Island area is an artist community with a plethora of seasonal and annual art shows. Whether hosted by the island's art association, organized by the Creative Coast Weekends program, or hung by a local gallery, art shows run in Matlacha throughout the fall, winter, and spring months.
  1. Art Association Shows

    • Pine Island Art Association hosts an annual art show in Matlacha Park. Open to local artists, the show features catagories for watercolor, oil, acrylic, pastel, pen and ink and mixed media. Within each category, prizes are awarded for first, second, and third place, as well and merit and honorable mention. The 38th annul art show took place in 2010, and displayed more than 400 works from 78 artists. The show is held in February of each year.

    Florida's Creative Coast Shows

    • Art in the Heart of Matlachala is organized each February by the Florida's Creative Coast Weekends program to coincide with the Pine Island Art Association show. The show collects works from a handful--usually 10 or fewer--of local artists. Work is displayed at galleries such as the Lovegrove Gallery & Gardens or WildChild Galleries. Art in the Heart often coincides with other events at the hosting galleries, such as musical performances or the opening of a show highlighting a local artist.

    Local Gallery Shows

    • Local galleries in Matchala host a number of shows from area artists. Galleries like Lovegrove Gallery & Gardens, WildChild Galleries, and the SyZyGy Gallery show art for viewing or purchase throughout the year. The Lovegrove Gallery focuses on building shows around the work of Leoma Lovegrove, proprietor and namesake of the gallery. SyZyGy Gallery creates shows highlighting the work of individual artists from the Matlacha area, such as John Gaughan. WildChild Gallery runs a special series of shows called Featured Artist Openings every two weeks from October to June, with opening events every second Friday.
