Did plays have women actors?

No, plays did not have women actors during many periods in history. In ancient Greek and Roman theatres, women were not permitted to perform on stage. In Elizabethan theatre, women were also excluded and male actors played female roles. It wasn't until later periods, such as the 17th and 18th centuries, that women began to appear on stage as actresses.
