How Do I Apply Stage Eye Makeup to Make My Eyes Seem Bigger?

In theater, many characters need big eyes to convey emotion to the audience from far away. With a few makeup techniques, its simple to make your eyes appear larger from the stage.
  1. Whiten Your Whites

    • Highlight and draw attention to the whites of the eyes by lining the inner rim of the eyes with a white eyeliner pencil. This will make the whites of your eyes appear larger.

    Outline the Whites

    • Outline the white liner you just put on using a dark brown or black kohl waterproof or water-resistant eyeliner, then line the top. This will create the illusion of your eyes being a half inch larger than they are.

    Curl Your Lashes

    • Using an eyelash curler, curl your lashes. Set the curl using a lengthening waterproof mascara then wait until lashes are dry. Curl your lashes softly again and then set the curl once more using a waterproof thickening mascara. Curling the lashes opens up and frames the eye area creating the illusion of big eyes.

    Add False Lashes

    • If you plan on putting on false lashes, do not curl lashes or apply mascara before adding false lashes. Adding false lash sets creates the illusion of bigger eyes because they open and frame the eyes, which draws attention to the contrasting whites of the eyes. Individual lashes are too natural for stage makeup; choose eyelash sets.
