How to Do Stage Makeup for Men

Makeup is an essential prop to any stage production, and even men need to spend time at the hands of a makeup artist. Stage productions require stage makeup for any actor regardless of gender, because natural facial features appear nonexistent beyond the first or second row. Stage makeup is very exaggerated-looking up close, but the audience simply sees beautiful faces. It may seem awkward putting on makeup at first, but once you see the results from the back of the theater you will understand its importance.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash your face with a gentle face soap. Dry thoroughly and apply alcohol-free toner with a cotton ball to close your pores and decrease makeup absorption.

    • 2

Apply a light coat of foundation primer with a makeup sponge. Your face should feel dry afterward. This will prevent the subsequent layers of makeup from sweating off when you are on stage.

    • 3

Apply concealer as necessary to large blemishes or under-eye circles. Blend with he concealer brush.

    • 4

Apply foundation with a makeup sponge. Start with a dot of foundation on the forehead, nose, chin and both cheeks and blend outward. Make sure to blend foundation on your neck and ears as well.

    • 5

Pick up some translucent powder on the bristles of the largest makeup brush and sweep lightly over foundation to set it.

    • 6

Use the foundation brush to apply the contour shade. Brush the contour shade on any area of your face that would be in shadow if you were standing in the sun. The sides of your nose, the temples, under the cheekbones, under the brow and the sides of your neck are the places to focus.

    • 7

Use the large brush that you used for the translucent powder to apply blush to the cheek. Brush from the center of the cheek to the temple.

    • 8

Sharpen the eyebrow pencil and use it to darken your eyebrows.

    • 9

Apply eye shadow primer with a makeup sponge and wait 15 seconds to apply eye shadow. Using the flat brush, apply the dark eye shadow to the outer crease of the eye in a sideways "V." Apply the dark shadow to the crease of the eye and blend.

    • 10

Clean the flat brush and use it to apply the highlight eye shadow under the eyebrows and at the inner corners of the eyes.

    • 11

Use the liner brush to apply the cream liner, close to the lash line on the upper lids. Start at the inner corner of the eye and move the brush to the center, then start at the outer corner of the eye and brush to the center to connect the line. Line the lower lashes, starting at the center and moving outward.

    • 12

      Apply lip balm.

    • 13

Hold the finishing spray bottle upright, eight inches from your face. Close your eyes, hold your breath and spray a light mist over your face and neck to set the makeup.

    • 14

Remove the makeup with cold cream, water and a soft washcloth after the show. Use moisturizer to replenish the skin after the drying effects of the makeup.
