How to Apply Stage Makeup to Children

Stage makeup for children can range from providing a natural appearance, to a more shocking one, depending upon the production, purpose and character. All stage makeup starts with a basic set up of cleansing the face and applying foundation or powder, as well as making the eyes and lips stand out. If more makeup needs to be applied on top of this, at least there will be a base for application.

Instructions

    • 1

Cleanse the face with cool water to remove any oils, dirt or previous makeup. Pat dry. Apply light colored foundation to the under-eye area and eye lid to get rid of dark circles.

    • 2

Use the makeup sponges to dip into the foundation that matches the skin color of the child, and apply carefully on the forehead, chin, nose and cheeks, blending downwards into the neck. Make sure to avoid the eye area. Only use foundation on the rest of the face if there are red, blotchy areas, as children's skin is fairly smooth and even toned.

    • 3

Use the powder brush to sweep powder over the entire face. Apply blush onto the apples of the child's cheeks, using just a bit more than necessary so the color will show up on stage.

    • 4

Apply the eye liner (black or brown) lightly on the upper lash line. Hold the child's eyelid down with your thumb and slowly and carefully draw a line from the inner eye to the outer lash line. Repeat this procedure with the lower lash line. Make sure not to put on inner lash line, and be careful not to poke the child's eye area.

    • 5

Fill in the eyebrows with an eyebrow pencil that matches the natural shade. This will provide emphasis on the eyebrows so that you can see them on stage. Do not line outside the natural eyebrows. Do not apply heavily.

    • 6

Pat translucent face powder all over face to set the makeup and get rid of shine. Next, apply mascara lightly to the eyelashes of the child. Make sure not to poke the eye area or get any of the mascara in the eyes. Use a Q-tip to lightly wipe the lash line after applying to collect any clumps or debris.

    • 7

Apply red lipstick to the mouth, staying within the lip lines. This will help bring color to the face and match the cheeks. Make sure the lipstick is red and not too dark. Use the tissues to blot out smudges and extra powder around the hairline.
