How to Care for Clown Wigs

A clown's wig is an integral part of the overall comedic effect. The red nose, big shoes and painted face would not be complete without outrageous hair to match. As with any aspect of a costume, clown wigs require care and maintenance so that you can use them several times over. With just a few household supplies, you'll be able to keep your clown wig looking convincingly hilarious.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the synthetic hair clown wig onto a Styrofoam head or wig stand following each use. This will help it maintain its shape and keep it from tangling.

    • 2

Fill a sink with cold water and add in one to two tablespoons of wig shampoo. Baking soda works well as a cleaner if you do not have access to a professional wig shampoo. Together, the water and shampoo are enough to clean the wig of any dirt and buildup. You won't need additional cleansing agents, such as conditioner.

    • 3

Swirl the wig around in the sink to clean it. Carefully finger comb the synthetic hair to remove any tangles, and then give it one final rinse of cold water.

    • 4

Hang the wet wig onto a hook or wig stand to allow it to drip dry. For quicker drying time, you can squeeze the hair with a towel to remove excess water. Squeeze with the towel, rather than twist or rub, to avoid tangles.

    • 5

Shake the wig before wearing to achieve volume. Depending on the style of wig, you may or may not choose to style it with heat-less styling tools, such as foam rollers, which can be left in over night to achieve a curly look.
