How to Make a Revolutionary War Wig

America's founding fathers sported highly fashionable, elaborate wigs. These wigs were a sign of social status as higher class members of society had the means to buy hand-crafted wigs. Make your own Revolutionary War wig for a realistic costume or theater performance in a fraction of the time as a colonial wig maker. Wig making products are readily available in most beauty supply stores. Making your own wig ensures that it will fit properly and comfortably.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure out and cut a portion of cotton lace over your head or the head of the future wig wearer. Remember that Revolutionary War style wigs were long in the back, so taper the cotton lace down the back of the neck as well. Leave patches of cotton lace for sideburns and a widow's peak.

    • 2

Place the cotton lace onto the wig block. Refine the cutting along sideburns and the line of the forehead.

    • 3

Line the ends of your cotton lace with bias tape, such that the sticky side faces inward. You now have your wig cap.

    • 4

Sew thin strands of hair through the lace membrane, looping the hair up at the root to form a knot. Start from the bottom and work your way upwards.

    • 5

Comb your wig and part the hair from ear to ear, combing part of it forward in front of the face area and part of it towards the back. Secure the front most hair with a hair pin.

    • 6

Create two barrel curls on each side of the wig by using a curling iron on sections of the loose hair. Select about 1 inch by 1 inch of hair immediately above each ear area and another area directly above the first for your four barrel curls. Plug the curling iron in and wait up to a minute for it to get hot. Wrap each section of hair around the barrel and hold in place for 30 seconds, forming a tight barrel close to the scalp of the wig. Secure the curls in place with pins and hair spray.

    • 7

Let the top crown of hair loose and comb it towards the back. This masks the center part and gives the wig a more masculine look, similar to one a high ranking solider during the Revolutionary War would wear.

    • 8

Tie all loose hair with a rubber band or string.
