How to Convert Mpx Dimmers to DMX

DMX512 is a standard in automated lighting. The name refers to the communication protocol between the controller and the lights, essentially the "language" they speak to one another. Touring shows occasionally encounter this problem of incompatibility between the host rig and their own equipment. But adapters and converters are available to translate the signals between different communication protocols.

Instructions

    • 1

Power off all equipment in the chain, the lights, dimmer and control surface. Disconnect the control surface from the main supply. Connect a data cable to the DMX controller output and connect the other end to the converter input. Power on the controller.

    • 2

Power on the converter and select the appropriate input and output modes. Some will use mechanical switches to set the input and output modes, others will have an LCD screen and a series of buttons. Set the input mode to "DMX512" and the output mode to "MPX" or "Microplex."

Connect the converter to the dimmer via another data cable. Power on the dimmer and the lights. Assign the dimmer pack to the dimmer channel on your controller.
