How to Terminate DMX Cables

DMX512 is a universal communication method for controlling lighting devices typically used in theater, concert and other entertainment productions. DMX is an acronym for "Digital Multiplex," and "512" indicates that up to 512 DMX devices may be connected daisy-chain style and controlled by a single DMX controller. DMX cables for professional use employ 5-conductor cables with matching connectors, with 3-wire versions commonly used for entry-level and semi-pro equipment. DMX terminators connected to the last device in the DMX chain are recommended to avoid possible address "mix-ups" which may occur when long cables runs are used, or many DMX devices are interconnected.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a DMX terminator at your local or online stage lighting distributor, and don't forget to specify whether you are using 5- or 3-pin DMX cables. Models with a built-in LED are helpful and indicate that the DMX signal-flow is operational throughout the terminating end of the chain.

    • 2

Connect your DMX controller, lights and other devices as you normally would, and plug the terminator plug into the DMX output jack of the last device in the chain.

    • 3

Power up the DMX controller, dimmer packs and other electrical components, and check the system for operation. If you have chosen a model that includes an LED, it will illuminate upon powering-up the system indicating proper signal path. Your DMX system and cables are now terminated.
