Whether you're an actor, director, designer or crew member; a portfolio is the most important tool for insuring your continued success in the field of professional theatre. The physical portfolio book is now a thing of the past, and online portfolios are the new wave of personal marketing for artists. There is simply no faster, easier or more economic way to get your work in front of potential employers. A well-organized site with quality content can go a long way towards your goal of a career in the theater arts.

Instructions

    • 1

Logon to the Internet and point your browser to a personal website creator such as Wix, Weebly, Yola or Webs. Click the sign-up button and register for an account following the instructions given by the website, make sure that the email you choose for login is one that you check often.

    • 2

Purchase a Domain name. Most personal website creators will put your content online free of charge, but in exchange will place ads on your page and put their name in your URL. This can look rather unprofessional, so it is best to purchase your own domain name. Visit a domain purchasing website and find an available website name, ideally one that includes your name.

    • 3

Navigate to the template page of your website creator, select a template that appeals to you and fits your aesthetic. Or, if you're feeling more adventurous, select a blank webpage and start from scratch.

    • 4

Modify the colors, fonts and layout of your homepage as necessary to make it reflect you and your art. You should include a photo of yourself as well as your full name and contact information. Write a short introductory paragraph that introduces you and your work. In the navigation menu of your page, include sections for resumes, multimedia and news.

    • 5

Create a multimedia page for your online portfolio, using the add page feature. If you're an actor, singer or dancer, this page should include your headshot as well as pictures and videos of you from past productions. If you have a song/monologue/dance that you usually do for auditions, have a friend film it and upload it here as well. Designers, directors and crew members will want to include pictures and video of productions in which their work has been featured.

    • 6

Build a resume page for your website. If you have only one resume, then upload it directly to the page. If you are multidisciplinary and have separate resumes for production and performance, than create a main resume page with links to each individual resume.

    • 7

Design a simple News page for your website. This should be a simple page that includes updates on your career such as new jobs, or upcoming gigs. This is also a good place to include more casual photos of yourself along with related news updates.

    • 8

Launch your website. Using the instructions given by your website creator, link your homepage to the domain name that you've purchased. Be sure to update your social networking sites and business card to include the URL to your new portfolio website. You now have a personal website that showcases your work to send to all of your potential employers.
