Famous Puppet Theaters

As an ancient medium of storytelling and theater, puppetry is an art form that has been a part of ancient cultures on every continent of the world, according to the book "Toward an Aesthetics of the Puppet: Puppetry as a Theatrical Art" by Steve Tillis. From tiny finger puppets to larger-than-life sized stars of the carnival, puppets continue to entertain, instruct and provide a craft for artists and artisans in modern times. Puppet theaters can now be found in countries around the globe, from China to Costa Rica. Many of these theaters have become internationally famous cultural and artistic institutions that have brought the puppet theater into the forefront of the performing arts arena.
  1. Salzburg Marrionette Theater

    • As one of the oldest, continuously operating marionette-style puppet theaters in the world, the Salzburg Marrionette Theater was established in 1913 in Salzburg, Austria. The Salzburg Marrionette Theater performs famous operas and musicals in a historic auditorium in the heart of the city. The marionettes themselves are the stars of the shows; they are hand carved by master sculptors and are manipulated by a dozen puppeteers that are trained in house. The theater also offers workshops for both puppet makers and puppeteers.

    Bread and Puppet Theater

    • Founded by political activists in the 1960s in Glover, Vermont, the Bread and Puppet Theater was a central feature of many of the anti-war protests in New York City during the Vietnam war. Now, the over-sized caricatures and political effigies that made the theater famous can be found performing across the United States and abroad. An apprenticeship to puppet makers and set designers is offered on the theater's rural Vermont farm.
