As one of the oldest, continuously operating marionette-style puppet theaters in the world, the Salzburg Marrionette Theater was established in 1913 in Salzburg, Austria. The Salzburg Marrionette Theater performs famous operas and musicals in a historic auditorium in the heart of the city. The marionettes themselves are the stars of the shows; they are hand carved by master sculptors and are manipulated by a dozen puppeteers that are trained in house. The theater also offers workshops for both puppet makers and puppeteers.

Founded by political activists in the 1960s in Glover, Vermont, the Bread and Puppet Theater was a central feature of many of the anti-war protests in New York City during the Vietnam war. Now, the over-sized caricatures and political effigies that made the theater famous can be found performing across the United States and abroad. An apprenticeship to puppet makers and set designers is offered on the theater's rural Vermont farm.
