Remove the side of the box you'll use as your display, making sure it has a top and a bottom (or "roof" and "floor"). Measure an even border on all sizes of the display front, two to three inches from the edge. Mark these areas carefully, and cut out the inner section with the box cutter.
Measure three centimeters to one inch in from either side and place a mark on both the roof and the floor of the display. Be sure this measurement is no further from the edge than the display window, and within one centimeter from the front edge of the display. Put a hole here and carefully slide your rod into either side from top to bottom. Form a "crank" or bent handle in the rod for easy grip.
Tape the edge of the illustrated paper onto the leftmost rod (when facing the display window). Crank the rod counterclockwise and wind up the entire length of the illustration. When complete, stretch the loose end of the illustration to the right rod, and secure it there with tape or glue.
Crank the rightmost rod counterclockwise to enact the set. Decorate the display window border to suit your play, or set up music to accompany the story.
