How to Juggle Scarves

Juggling scarves is a great way for beginners to ease into the world of juggling. The quick movements of balls, rings, and clubs can be overwhelming for jugglers who are just starting out, and the slow way that scarves drift through the air makes it easy to throw and catch them with time to spare. When learning with scarves, beginning jugglers can really become familiar with basic moves and patterns.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin with one scarf. Stand up and hold it in your dominant hand at about shoulder level. Clutch the scarf lightly; don't grip it too tightly. Your palm should be facing downward, and your non-dominant hand should also be at about shoulder height. In a rainbow-shaped arc, throw the scarf across your body, toward your non-dominant hand. Reach up and catch the scarf with your non-dominant hand. Don't rush!

Now throw the scarf from your non-dominant hand back to your dominant hand in the same way. Continue to practice this way with a single scarf until you have mastered the move.

    • 2

Pick up a second scarf and hold one scarf in each hand, gripped lightly, with hands at shoulder level. Begin by doing step 1 and throwing the scarf from your dominant hand over to your non-dominant hand in an arc. After you have let go of that scarf, reach up with your non-dominant hand to throw the scarf from that hand.

Finally, catch the scarves. First, use your non-dominant hand to catch the first scarf you threw. Then use your dominant hand to catch the second scarf you threw.

    • 3

Hold all three scarves. Two should be in your dominant hand and one in your non-dominant hand. To throw all three scarves, you will use the same pattern in step 2, but the movements will be faster.

Begin by throwing the first scarf from your dominant hand to your non-dominant hand. When it reaches its highest point, reach up and throw the second scarf from your non-dominant hand. Then catch the first scarf you threw. Finally, throw the third scarf and catch the second one you threw.

You will only have two scarves in the air at once, never three. The pattern is to throw -- catch -- throw -- catch -- throw. At any time, you can pause what you are doing, catch all three scarves, and take a break.
