How to Tie Belly Dance Hip Scarves

According to an article presented by the International Academy of Middle Eastern Dance, the roots of belly dancing can be traced to the "traditional women's dances of the Middle East and North Africa," and "the greatest misconception about belly dance is that is is intended to entertain men." In fact, belly dancing was developed in a culture largely segregated by sexes; men were often not present at performances. The dance itself, centering on the torso, is characterized by smooth, flowing movements alternating with quick flicking, shaking, and shimmying. The colorful costume dancers wear, including the all-important hip scarf, is in some ways considered part of the dance since it flows and shakes with the dancer.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose the type of hip scarf you prefer. Typically, they come in two styles, triangular and rectangular. Most hip scarves include rows of real or plastic coins or small medallions of some type to provide an enchanting jingle when your hips are moved.

    • 2

Determine which end is "up" on your scarf by observing the coins. They should face away from your body and swing freely when the scarf is upright.

    • 3

Clasp one end of the scarf in each of your hands and wrap it snugly around your hips. As befits its name, the scarf should be placed around your hips and not your waist. The purpose of the scarf is to accentuate the movements of your dancing hips.

    • 4

Securely tie the scarf in place with a simple square knot. You may bring both ends to the front of your body, just under your belly button or to the side of your hip to tie it. Either method is equally acceptable. The most important factor is to tie the scarf securely so it does not loosen as you dance.
