How to Create a Ballerina Marionette Look

Theater makeup impacts the audience through expressions and color; shaping the face with makeup conveys mood and personality. A ballerina marionette look includes sharp doll-like painted-on eyebrows that look jaded and surprised, perfectly flawless skin and painted-on lips. Using appropriate tools and materials specifically for makeup-artists, you can create many variations of this look or alter this look to your specifications with a dusting of glitter or your choice of eyeshadow.

Instructions

    • 1

Wipe entire eyebrow area with astringent, removing excess facial oils, so spirit gum and wax will adhere better and stay on longer.

    • 2

Apply spirit gum to the eyebrows, covering the eyebrows completely. Wait until the gum partially dries to a tacky consistency. Use the knife to scrape enough wax to cover the eyebrow hair completely. Smooth the wax down with clean fingers until the edges of the wax's texture transition smoothly into the skin.

    • 3

Brush on some concealer to cover the wax. Dust a bit of loose translucent powder to set the makeup and make it last longer.

    • 4

Smooth a small amount of eyeshadow base onto the eyelid, so it is completely covered from lash line to brow bone. Softly blend the base with fingers, so the base is uniform; this will ensure long-lasting, smooth shadows that stay where you apply them.

    • 5

Apply the eyeshadow colors of your choice; be sure to keep the colors light in the middle of the lid and darker in the crease.

    • 6

Apply thin black eyeliner just above the lashline and extend a little bit faurther than the outer corners of the eyes.

    • 7

Choose an eyeshadow three shades lighter than her skin tone and apply it to her brow bone.

    • 8

Draw on eyebrows very thin, beginning from where her natural brows are and extending the curve higher than her real brow; end where her natural brow ends, making sure both sides are even.

    • 9
      Eyelash curler

Curl her lashes using an eyelash curler. Apply mascara to her top and bottom lashes.

    • 10
      Flawless lips

Apply foundation to her entire face, avoiding the eye area. Dot concealer under eyes, and blend with fingers, using a soft tapping motion. While her eyes are closed, dust a bit of translucent powder to set the concealer and foundation.

    • 11

Tell her to smile and apply blush using the blush brush to the fleshy part of her cheeks.

    • 12

Apply lip balm to her lips. Blot lips with a tissue. Apply lipstick with a lip brush. Line the edges for a sharp line. Color in the inner edges of the lips to blend the lip liner color with the lipstick. Dot a bit of lip gloss in the middle of bottom and top lips, and spread the gloss slightly to give lips a glass-like shine.

    • 13

Using the powder brush, dust shimmer powder onto the cheekbones, jawline, temples and bridge of nose.

    • 14

Using the black waterproof liner pencil, draw on marionette lines extending down from the corners of her mouth down to the bottom of her jawline and curving around towards the back of her neck, so the line disappears into her hairline. Make sure both sides are even.
