Grants for Non-Profit Theaters

Several non-profit federal agencies, private institutions and artistic collections across the country offer up thousands of dollars in grant money to theater companies each year. Most grants go to theater companies in the U.S. planning to put on an innovative or challenging production. Theater owners and managers looking to gain start-up money for a particular project should consider the following annual grant programs.
  1. National Endowment for the Arts

    • The National Endowment for the Arts is an independent federal agency aimed at supporting artistic endeavors across the country. The organization offers grants for non-profit theater companies of all sizes and levels of ambition. Grants go to American theaters that are looking to fund new projects such as classical or traditional plays, new plays, youth-oriented plays, community-based work, experimental plays and puppetry performances. National Endowment for the Arts theater grants are available in amounts ranging from $5,000 to $150,000. The majority of the grants are offered on an annual basis.

The $100,000 grant is limited to those theater companies in New York and the surrounding tri-state area. In 2009 and 2010, the Tony Randall Theatrical Fund changed its guidelines, awarding $5,000 to $10,000 to 10 different theatre companies in need of financial assistance. Past winners of the grant include McCarter Theatre, Pig Iron Theatre Company, New Georges and O’Neill Theatre Company.
