International Theater Grants

Theater is an active art form that defines and questions a culture. The growth of some performing artists is dependent upon their exposure to different cultures and their ability to place themselves in an international context. Grant-awarding organizations recognize the importance of showcasing U.S.-based talent on international stages; often these organizations provide funds to support theater with an international vision or companies and artists who intend to travel.
  1. The Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation

    • The Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation (MMAF) funds individual artists and dance, theater and music groups consisting primarily of U.S. citizens who have been invited to perform in international festivals not held in the U.S. MMAF's mission is to ensure that performing artists from the U.S. are represented at international festivals. The foundation also supports these festivals, but only if they are organized by non-U.S. institutions. Grant amounts vary each year.

    The International Theatre Institute

    • The International Theatre Institute (ITI) provides various prizes to theatrical projects with an international bent. ITI's New Playwriting Competition gives first-, second- and third-place awards to playwrights submitting work with an international theme. ITI also awards $10,000 to university programs for international productions involving their students.

The National Endowment for the Arts

    • The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) provides the Access to Artistic Excellence award to nonprofit theater groups. According to the NEA, this award "encourages and supports artistic creativity, preserves our diverse cultural heritage, and makes the arts more widely available in communities across the country." In the past the NEA has funded various international projects executed by U.S.-based theater groups. Award amounts range from $5,000 to $150,000.

    Etant Donnes

    • Etant Donnes supports collaboration between French and American artists.

Etant donnes, The French-American Fund for the Performing Arts, provides funding to an American theatrical organization that will host at least one French artist or perform one French work within a performance season. The grant focuses on funding new plays being produced outside of France for the first time, although it does fund French classics if the production involves collaboration with French artists. The fund also grants awards to French organizations working with American artists.
