Sandra Day O'Connor was replaced by John Roberts in 2005.
While Roberts is the Chief Justice of the United States, he was originally appointed to replace O'Connor as an Associate Justice. He was later nominated and confirmed to become Chief Justice upon the retirement of William Rehnquist.
