In which two ways do extras function in a drama?

* As background characters: Extras fill out the background of a scene, providing a sense of realism and atmosphere. For example, they might be seen milling about in a crowd, or working as servants in a wealthy household.

* As supporting characters: Extras can also play a more active role in the drama, supporting the main characters and helping to move the story forward. For example, they might be the friends or family of the main characters, or they might be involved in a subplot that runs alongside the main story.
