A mural is a simple way to add decoration and get the kids involved. Decide ahead of time on the space for the mural, marking the space off with masking tape. Divide the kids into teams and number each team. Place the numbers in a hat and draw one at a time, to determine the order of the painters. Give each team a specific amount of time to work on the mural, such as 30 minutes to come up with an idea and one hour to paint. Once first team's time is up, the next team goes. This gets every kid involved in the painting of the mural. Alternatively, purchase a mural kit and ask the kids for help in assembling the kit and hanging the different elements on the wall.
Encourage the children to make decorations for the holidays and hang those decorations around the church. During the Christmas season, place a tree in a prominent location and let the kids make ornaments for the tree. The kids can make popcorn strings, gingerbread men, strings of paper rings and even clay ornaments. Make homemade cards for Valentine’s Day and paper eggs for Easter. Set aside one area of the church to display the kids’ crafts and encourage parents to see what their kids do after school and in class.
Incorporate popular characters into the design of your church, but let the kids pick their favorites. Ask the kids to give you a list of five characters they like and look for repetition to determine the most popular picks. Paint the characters onto the walls of the area set aside for the children. Use pillows decorated with the characters, lamps and other decorative accessories that feature the characters. Alternate the character-decorated items with neutral colored ones to create a warm and inviting space for all the children in the church.
