Children's Acting Games

Acting is a good means of teaching children to become more confident in public speaking situations, stretch their imaginations and become more aware of their bodies. Since kids respond well to entertainment, games are a way to get the principles of acting across without merely handing a child a script and asking him to perform.
  1. What Would You Do?

    • This game teaches children to follow directions and how to react to something instantly while staying in character. A narrator gives the chosen child a character. The narrator begins to narrate the child's action and the child must act them out as the narrator speaks, building his character as the game continues. Set a time limit for each person/story so he has to continue to the full length of time and there is a definite ending to each child's turn to keep things fair.

    What Could It Be?

    • For this game, try to stretch the imagination by coming up with numerous ideas for what an everyday item could actually be. To play, form a circle. Pass an object around the circle. Each person must come up with a different idea of what the item actually is. If someone repeats what has already been said, she must change it to make the answer different. Play continues until everyone has had a chance.

    Park Bench

    • This is a game all about personalities. Set up a bench and have one person sit on it doing whatever business he would like, such as reading a book, looking around or listening to music. Give another person an identity and the identity of the person on the bench. She must go sit on the bench and engage in conversation with the other person, giving clues to who the other person is so he can figure it out. The two must improv for a few minutes in character.

    Pantomime

    • Have children work on their body language with some pantomiming. Give them a situation or thing they have to act out without words then let the other children guess what it is they are doing.
