Good Movie Ideas for Kids

Kids have a wide range of tastes in movies, and there is not a "one size fits all" approach. A large variety of movies are available that appeal to children of different ages and interests. A creative approach to a good movie night is to allow kids to share their ideas and movie recommendations, while sharing your own movie experiences and suggestions. Children may be curious to know what movies you watched as a child.
  1. Classic Children Movies

    • Watching classic children movies is a fun way to rekindle your own early childhood movies experiences with your children. Certain movies--such as "The Wizard of Oz," "Mary Poppins," and "The Sound of Music"--have appealed to children over the years. Other classic children movies includes films such as "Alice in Wonderland," "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" and "Beauty and the Beast."

    Animated Movies

    • Animated movies are popular with kids. Computers and technology have dramatically increased and expanded the powers and effects of animation; many animated films are now becoming the new classics for children. Some of the most popular contemporary animated films include "The Little Mermaid," "Finding Nemo," "Happy Feet," and "James and the Giant Peach." Animated films have also become more sophisticated and this making it possible for adults to enjoy the movies as much as the children do. Movies in this category include "Shrek," "Antz" and "The Incredibles."

    Fantasy and Action Films

    • Fantasy and action films also have a strong appeal to adults as well as children. "Back to the Future," "Ghostbusters" and "Jurassic Park" have been around long enough to be considered classics. Newer movies such as the Harry Potter series and the Spiderman series are popular choices with children. The appeal of these movies is broad enough to appeal to a young and older children.

    Classic Movies

    • One fun thing to do with a family movie night is to expose children to "oldies" or classic movies. This can be both educational and entertaining. Choices are numerous, including comedies such as Abbott and Costello movies, action movies such as "The Adventure of Robin Hood," fantasy movies such as "King Kong," and emotional dramas such as "National Velvet." It is also fun to teach children about the age of silent films with classics, such as Charlie Chaplin's "The Gold Rush."
