Theater Names on Broadway in New York City

As of 2010, there are currently 40 Broadway theaters in New York City with plays and musicals performing throughout the year. The theaters are located in the Theater District of the city and provide live entertainment options for both residents of New York and tourists. Broadway shows have long been considered the pinnacle of live theater and have played home to star actors, singers, choreographers, composers and playwrights for over 100 years.
  1. Palace Theater

    • The Palace Theater was completed in 1913 and originally combined movies with live theater. Until the 1950s, the Palace Theater showed all film until the owners decided to take advantage of the rejuvenation of live entertainment that was started by Frank Sinatra. The Palace reopened after a full renovation in 1966 and became a venue for musical comedy. The Theater has played home to numerous Broadway hits including Applause, Lorelei, Home Sweet Home, La Cage aux Folles, and The Will Rogers Follies. More recent shows have included the Disney productions Beauty and the Beast, Aida and Legally Blonde. As of 2010, the Palace Theater is home to West Side Story and offers both matinee and evening show options.

    Cadillac Winter Garden

    • The Cadillac Winter Garden is a part of the Shubert Organization of theaters and has occupied the second American Horse Exchange since 1896. The property was converted into a theater in 1911 and had brief stints as a movie theater with leased by Warner Brothers and United Artists. The theater has played home to a number of musicals and concerts throughout the years including performances featuring Bob Hope, Willie Howard, and Gypsy Rose Lee. Past shows include the premier of West Side Story, Peter Pan, Gypsy, Follies, Pacific Overtures and Cats. In 2001, Mamma Mia! opened and continues to play at the theater on a continuing basis.

    Majestic on Broadway

    • As of 2010, the Majestic on Broadway is home to the longest running show in the history of Broadway: Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera. The theater was renovated specifically for the show's opening in 1988 and has played home to the musical ever since. Majestic on Broadway is a part of the Shubert Organization and was originally built in 1927 as a part of a three theater complex. The Majestic has been home to a number of significant but short lived productions including The Patriot, Me and Juliet, The Music Man, The Wiz, Mack and Mable, and 42nd Street. The theater was also home to a decade long run of four Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals that premiered consecutively beginning in 1945.
