How to Form a Church Choir

Singing provides enjoyment for the singer and the audience, and belonging to a church choir offers an opportunity for bonding, fellowship and learning vocal skills. A church choir plays an important role in enhancing and guiding the flow of the service. Here are some ideas to help you form one at your church.

Instructions

    • 1

Let the pastor and influential church members know that you want to form a church choir. Ask for guidance from God and pray about your desire to help your church family by forming a choir.

    • 2

Get the word out that you are forming a church choir and need singers. Create fliers and handouts and post them around the church. Advertise in the service bulletin and the church newsletter and on the website. Make an announcement during the service.

    • 3

Find a core group of singers willing to make a commitment of at least six months. They must agree to attend all rehearsals. Try to find at least two members for each vocal part. Choose the best singer in each to be a section leader. They will help you teach songs to the rest of the choir.

    • 4

Hold auditions. Church choirs usually let anyone join the choir, regardless of singing ability. The purpose of auditions is to know who can sing, who needs a little help and who will simply add voices to the choir. Choose a variety of soloists from among the best singers.

    • 5

Set a location, date and time for rehearsals. This should be based on the schedules of your core group and the majority of your choir. Members have family commitments and jobs, so make sure practice starts and ends on time.

    • 6

Select a repertoire of five to 10 songs and rotate every three months, including seasonal songs as needed for Easter and Christmas. Be prepared to teach vocal skills, breathing techniques, counting and basic sight-reading. Decide on the types of music the choir will perform. Gospel, contemporary Christian, classic gospel and spirituals are just some of the genres to consider.

Encourage and appreciate your singers. They are volunteers. Remind them why being a choir member is good for the church and gives them an opportunity to serve God through their music. Thank them for all they do.
