How to Sing in a Church Choir

You love to sing. Perhaps it's your favorite part of church services each week. Singing in your church choir allows you to participate in your church community. Singing in a community, church or school chorus is strongly linked to teamwork and discipline, according to a 2008 study by Chorus America. Church choirs have singers of all skill levels and vocal abilities.

Instructions

    • 1

Ask your church’s choral director about any openings in the choir. While every church choral group has its own standards, many welcome anyone who wants to participate.

    • 2

Audition for a spot in the choir or go to a rehearsal. Depending on the size and competitive nature of your church’s choir, you may be asked to audition. If not, start attending rehearsals.

    • 3

Go regularly. You may not be able to make every rehearsal, but being consistent shows your commitment. Rehearsal can also help ease your nerves about an upcoming performance.

    • 4

Attend any performances you sign up for on time and appropriately dressed. If you are not required to wear choral robes, ask your director for guidance on performance attire.

    • 5

Practice by listening to recordings of the music you will be performing. Your choral director may ask everyone’s permission to record a rehearsal for reference, or might provide you with an example to listen to.
