Take a look at what the KJ (karaoke DJ) has to offer. Usually they have their songs listed in big books or binders through out the bar. Make sure you at least skim through for your favorite artists. See what songs he has for each of those artists, and pick a couple contenders. Yes you only plan on singing once, but karaoke is like a drug. You can’t just do it once. Unless the KJ has said he/she has more songs than are in the book, do not ask if they have a song. If it isn’t in the book, just go with the idea that they do not have it.
Know your range. No one is expecting you to get up there and be amazing. This is not American Idol this is karaoke at a bar. However, you will fare much better if you pick a song that is within your vocal range. Pick something that will fit your voice and isn’t too high or too low for you to sing.
Pick a song you know. Please pick a song you know and know well. Yes, the words are on the screen, but that does you little good if you do not know the melody. Some people may know the chorus to a certain song, but have no clue how the verses go let alone the bridge. This could lead to disaster. If give the choice always go with the song you know you have sang along with in the car more times than you can count.
Pick your song. Go with the song that you think you will do best. Always have a back up song just in case someone has already sang it, someone already has it in the rotation, or if they cannot find it.
Submit your song to the KJ. Most KJ’s have you put your name, the song title, and usually where you can find the song (volume numbers, file numbers) on a piece of paper and submit it to his or her. Other use a more hi-tech approach where you key in your information and it prints off your song choice. Usually the KJ will tell the audience how to submit a song many times through out the night. If you still have questions, consult a karaoke regular and they will be more than happy to assist you. Now get up there and sing.
